How do wrinkles form?
Wrinkles are caused by the decrease of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. As we age, these substances (which keep our skin smooth) decrease. In young skin, a typical structure of the skin tissue and a large amount of collagen and elastin, which contribute to the building blocks of the skin's structure, ensure that the skin looks and feels firm. Over time, the internal aging process preceded by our genes in combination with externally induced oxidative stress, for example, exposure to sunlight, affects the appearance of the skin. Wrinkles can then form.
An annual decrease in the collagen of 1% and an increasingly disrupted skin structure makes the skin less firm, and wrinkles arise. Another critical factor in the development of wrinkles is a decrease in the production of hyaluronic acid. This is the binding substance that encloses the cells and gives the skin a youthful, smooth appearance. The skin structure loses its full and firm feeling by decreasing this skin-specific substance, and it forms folds more quickly. These general aging processes also contribute to a loss of density and loss of volume.
Where do wrinkles appear?
Lines in the forehead furrows, between the eyebrows, and laugh lines appear. As we age, they develop into more visible wrinkles. Fine lines around the mouth and nose can become deep and visible, the so-called nasolabial folds appear.
Wrinkles can appear in various places on the face and neck. Unlike the loss of volume or density, wrinkles are evident because they appear as clear lines or folds on the face. They usually appear first in certain areas:
- On the forehead, you can observe horizontal lines and grooves between the eyebrows. These start as "mimicking wrinkles" and are caused in part by facial expressions. These fine lines become deeper wrinkles over time.
- Fine lines appear in the outer corners of the eyes and become more pronounced as time goes on. They are called 'crow's feet' or 'laughter lines'. These wrinkles are often the first to appear. This is because the thinner skin forms lines here faster than in other parts of the face.
- Deeper wrinkles appear between the nose and mouth, connecting the two areas. These wrinkles are called nasolabial folds. The appearance of these wrinkles is related to loss of volume, as they are also a sign of sagging skin.
- Fine lines appear over the entire face over time. They are unaffected by facial expressions and are always visible. They initially appear as a wrinkly skin texture that gradually develops into more pronounced wrinkles as we age. Reduced elasticity and density promote its formation. These facial wrinkles can appear anywhere on the face, but they are most visible around and directly under the eyes.
How to treat wrinkles?
These skincare ingredients are found in anti-aging products. They all have different functions in the skin and, together with other components of cosmetic products, can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles in different ways.
Using anti-aging products can help make wrinkles less visible.
Substances such as coenzyme Q10, AHAs, pentapeptides, hyaluronic acid, saponin, magnolol, and arctiin are active ingredients in the formulas of anti-aging products.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Act like super scrubs. They break the bonds that hold dry and damaged cells together to allow new skin to appear.
Argan oil
Argan oil (also known as Argania Spinosa kernel oil) comes from the kernels of the Argan tree. It contains up to 80% essential fatty acids (omega-9 and omega-6). The body uses fatty acids to produce and repair cell membranes and strengthen the skin to perform its vital function and protect the body. Argan oil is also rich in vitamin E (a powerful antioxidant) and has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Hyaluronic Acid
A naturally occurring substance in the skin that can bind up to 30 times its molecular weight in water. As an active skincare product, it has a strong skin firming effect that can effectively reduce wrinkles. The main active ingredients in ID Swiss botanicals deep hydrating serum .
